SCHOLLE IN THE NEWS
07/31/2008 | Low-acid aseptically packaged products revolutionized the dairy, beverage and food packaging industries. These packaging solutions provided products that do not require refrigeration prior to use, are safer for consumption and last longer than fresh pack products. Bag-in-box systems have been integral in allowing processers to offer aseptic products in dispensing applications, further enabling the growth of these industries.
One challenge to the aseptic process is that fitments must be sterilized prior to filling. Because a closure is required that can withstand the stringent sterilization procedure, processors have been forced to use an expensive two-fitment bag (one for filling, one for dispensing) or an inconvenient but sterilization proof single-fitment bag.
While the two-fitment bags added cost to the package, the one-fitment bags opened the processors up to potential food safety issues. To install a dispensing connector the end-user had to use a tool to pry open the cap of the fitment and then push a dispensing connector firmly down in its place. This practice exposed the product to open air thus causing the potential food safety hazards.
In 2005, Scholle Packaging introduced breakthrough technology with the first generation Sentry SafeLock™ System. The Sentry SafeLock replaces the previous packaging thus eliminating the challenges associated with dispensing aseptically packaged products. The first generation system is ideal for dispensing smaller measurements of product, such as creamers.
The new FastFlow Sentry SafeLock is designed for products that require a higher flow rate, like iced coffees. The original Sentry SafeLock has a 10.3 mm hole and the FastFlow Sentry SafeLock has an 18.5 mm opening, moving the product up to 4 times faster than the original Sentry SafeLock. This makes the new FastFlow Sentry SafeLock ideally suited for products that need fast flow rates or are more viscous – a great addition to the family of Sentry fitments!
The new dispenser system will be formally introduced at Scholle's table top display during the ASEPTIPAK 2008 Global Forum on Aseptic Processing, Filling and Packaging.
Scholle Packaging innovations are focused on solving problems and delivering value in the markets we service. Both Sentry SafeLock systems represent another in a long line of innovations that help our customers strengthen their brands and expand their business.
